Rare Birds Book Club: May 2019

Another month, another book in the post! It’s already May and time for the next Rare Birds Book Club book!

I wasn’t a big fan of last month’s book “Transcription” and had my fingers crossed that this month wasn’t going to bring more historical fiction. I’ve enjoyed most of the books I’ve received so far but was hoping for something a little different this time.

Thoughts:

As I was out of the office over the bank holiday, it took me a few extra days to find out what we’d be reading this month. When I finally got my hands on it, I opened this month’s parcel to find “Ponti” by Sharlene Teo, a book I had actually been eyeing up a few weeks before because of its beautiful cover!

“Ponti” is said to be a multi-generational story which makes me think of Yaa Gyasi‘s “Homegoing” and “White Teeth” by Zadie Smith, both books I loved.

Set against the backdrop of vibrant Singapore in the early 2000s, this sounds like a story I’m going to enjoy. Szu is 16 years old living in her mother’s shadow and has just started performing séances with her sister. Szu then meets and becomes friends with Circe, offering Szu an escape from her mother’s solitariness.

I’ve not read anything or heard of this author before, so I’m looking forward to giving it a try. Keep a look out for a review over the next couple of weeks!
