It’s my stop on the “#YouToo” blog tour! Thanks very much to Anne Cater and author Candy Denman who have kindly provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. If you’d like to learn more about this book, check out the other blogs on the tour, see what people have to say on Goodreads and head over to the author’s Twitter page.

Summary:

At first it seems like an isolated incident – a case of erotic auto-asphyxiation gone badly wrong. But as the scandalous and murderous events pile up, Dr Jo Hughes, forensic practitioner, is convinced there is a connection. Searching for the reason behind the attacks, Jo realises there will be more, and that Detective Inspector Steve Miller may well be the next victim.

Thoughts:

#YouToo is the third book in the series featuring Dr Jocasta Hughes, but is completely enjoyable as a standalone read. Dr Hughes is a medical doctor, taking care of a huge variety of patients day-to-day, but she’s also got a hobby that she seems to be slightly more fond of: working as a forensic practitioner. Whenever there’s a body, Jo heads straight there, ready to confirm the death and perhaps find some clues explaining the cause too.

The first body we encounter in this book appears to be an accident, then so does the second, and as the deaths increase, Jo sees a connection and starts investigating for herself – surely all of these deaths in the seaside town of Hastings can’t be coincidental…

As Jo tries to put the pieces together, author Candy Denman tells a story full of twists and turns and this mystery really kept me on my toes. The #MeToo campaign has become massive in recent years and this book explores these topics in depth, looking at how sex can be used both abusively and manipulatively.

Despite this dark topic, leading lady Jo was really likable, she’s brave and she’s resilient and she’s not afraid of witnessing the macabre and distressing details of a sudden death. But she’s also a GP, and I really enjoyed reading about the medical side of things in this book. I particularly enjoyed reading about patients June and Mr Herring and I also love to read about places that I know, so the locations being in Sussex and Kent really put a smile on my face. I also read that Labrador Lady M was named through a competition in the Hastings Online Times – how cute!

Overall rating: #YouToo is a gripping mystery with likable characters. If you’re a fan of British crime fiction, I’d recommend giving this one a go – it’s 4 stars from me and I’ll be keeping an eye out for more Dr Jocasta Hughes mysteries in the future.

  1. Aaahhh, I read the first in the series and then didn’t keep up when the next one came out. Now I obviously need to get both books that I’m missing. I really liked the first one! Great post. I’m off to hunt down the second in the series….
