Summary:

An engrossing and emotionally true novel about the love triangle from hell – an agent, Dani, her star client and a paparazzi photographer programmed to expose.

Sometimes even the most grounded people make bad decisions – decisions that even they cannot explain. And sometimes bad decisions take on a life of their own . . .

Having an affair is inconceivable to Dani and yet she’s having one with Alex. He’s married, he’s an actor and she’s his agent. Then Dani meets Sean, a paparazzi photographer with a formidable reputation. It’s a profession that makes him unpredictable at best. A dangerous trait when his motivation to expose becomes personal.

Can Dani dig her way out of a bad situation that she thought that she was too smart to get into?

Thoughts:

“I Can’t Tell You Why” is Elaine Robertson North‘s debut novel. She tells the story of Dani, an agent in the entertainment industry working in London‘s Soho, a location I’m quite familiar with. Some of Dani’s clients are successful household names but others not so much and as she headed out looking for new talent I realised that this is not a career you typically read about in fiction and I quite enjoyed having a little peek into how it all works.

One of Dani’s best clients is Alex: blonde, blue eyed and handsome. He’s just scored himself a part in a major new drama which he now has to promote. Alex is a married family man, but that doesn’t seem to stop him lusting over Dani.

“Alex watched Dani nervously play with several uneven lumps of sugar, wondering if she was aware that all he wanted to do was whisk her away to a bedroom and spend the day having wild, passionate sex with her…”

At first Dani shuts down any idea of a fling between them as she knows that this is wrong and she knows what kind of damage an affair can do to a family, but somehow she still falls for him. Then when paparazzi photographer Sean comes into the picture, things get even messier as Dani finds herself in a complicated love triangle.

Dani is a well developed character; she’s strong willed, she’s independent and she’s feisty. She can’t explain why she’s done the things she has done and that is very relatable in a character as we all make mistakes in life!

I enjoyed the narrative of this story and the characters too, but I didn’t love the writing, which I felt could have done with a little more editing here and there. That said, this is a great debut novel and that I’d definitely recommend if this sounds like your cup of tea.

Overall rating: “I Can’t Tell You Why” tells the story of a woman questioning the decisions she has made in her love life. Recommended for fans of contemporary romance that doesn’t always go to plan – it’s 4 stars from me.

Don’t forget to check out the reviews of other blogs on the tour and if this sounds like your kind of book, support this self published author by picking up a copy on Amazon UK.
