KönyvBár: A book themed restaurant

We stumbled across KönyvBár on a quick Google search for ‘best restaurants in Budapest’. Google is not wrong, KönyvBár is a fantastic bookish experience that I’d highly recommend for your next trip to the Hungarian capital!

As far as I can tell, KönyvBár translates as Book Bar and that’s exactly what it is! Every couple of weeks this restaurant creates a five course menu creatively inspired by a single book.

You can order the courses individually, but to get the full experience (and cover the whole book), you’d be best going for the whole tasting menu, available from 12:00 till 21:45 everyday.

When we visited last week, the book was Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix and here’s what we were served:

  1. Dementor in Little Whinging – Foie gras, sour-cherry, walnut
  2. Professor Umbridge – Beetroot, chickpea, pomegranate
  3. I must not tell lies – Fillet of cod, fennel, grapefruit
  4. Oracle – Beef flank steak, potato, gorgonzola
  5. Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes – Coconut, passion fruit, mango

We really enjoyed our experience here. It was fun, the food was delicious and the service was excellent too. After the artistic presentation of each course our allocated waiter gave a little introduction, explaining how the meal related to the chapter and the components of what we were about to eat.

This Harry Potter meal was just one of the wide range of books that KönyvBár has done (they’ve recently done Winnie the Pooh and Game of Thrones). Read more and have a look at other books they’ve done before on the restaurant’s website: Our Books

Even if you’re not an avid reader, or the book they’re cooking isn’t your absolute favourite, I’d really recommend this place. If you do plan to go, definitely book a table in advance to avoid disappointment (I received a pretty speedy response by email but you can also call).

Have any of you been here? Would you like to? What book would you love to see in meal form?
