Summary:

In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure. On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness. That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiance, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants while trying to protect the ones she loves. But who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly?

Thoughts:

“Daisy Jones and the Six” and “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” are two of my favourite reads of recent years so I figured it was about time I tried something else by the author, Taylor Jenkins Reid. I chose “One True Loves” as soon as I saw it pop up on my library app in audiobook format and wow, I’m so glad I did!

Less glam and fashionable than my previous reads, this story is a little more day to day. Emma Blair and Jesse Lerner are childhood sweethearts. Married and travelling the world together, the pair are as close as can be, falling deeper in love every day. Then, one day before their first wedding anniversary, Jesse takes a trip that changes their lives forever.

It’s not a spoiler to say that Jesse is gone for several years and in this time Emma moves on. When Jesse returns, Emma is torn, left to figure out what she wants in life and who she wants to explore that with.

I really enjoyed this book and I found myself thinking about it in the time between reading. I loved that although it’s romantic, it’s not a typical love story and I had so may questions about what I might do in Emma’s situation. It’s a plot that’s grounded in reality and could very easily be true story that you read about in the news or online.

“One True Loves” is an entertaining, emotional, inspiring and heart-breaking read and just like the other books I have read by this author, it’s so well written. Taylor Jenkins Reid is such an amazing story teller! There were a couple of plot points that I felt implausible, but in all honestly, this wasn’t enough to spoil my enjoyment of the story.

“I don’t think that true love means your only love. I think true love means loving truly. Loving purely. Loving wholly.”

I’m exited to read more from this author!

Overall rating: “One True Loves” is another fantastic read from Taylor Jenkins Reid. Following Emma Reid on her journey through love, loss, and generally just finding a way, this was a really great book. A strong 5 stars!
