Although I know I'm in the minority, I'm afraid that for me, "Shuggie Bain" wasn't a hit. There were moments that I liked but they were few and far between and I struggled to engage with this very sad and bleak story. This was a 2 star read for me.
"The Haunting of Hill House" wasn't as scary as I had expected and the story wasn't what I was expecting either! That said, I really enjoyed this classic horror. It's well written and the protagonist is one of my favourite characters in a long time - 4 stars!
"An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones was a book of two parts for me. The first was compelling, the second not so much. I definitely didn't hate it but it wasn't my favourite either, sitting somewhere in the middle with 3 stars.
I know I'm in the minority here but I really couldn't get into this book. In a post apocalyptic world, a group of travelling musicians and actors wasn't enough to keep my gripped or engaged. Not awful, but with too much going on and not enough attention paid to characters and crucial plot points, "Station Eleven" is getting 2 stars from me.
