Although I know I'm in the minority, I'm afraid that for me, "Shuggie Bain" wasn't a hit. There were moments that I liked but they were few and far between and I struggled to engage with this very sad and bleak story. This was a 2 star read for me.
"Girl, Woman, Other" is a worthy winner of the Booker Prize. Telling the story of 12 interconnected fictional characters, this is a fantastic observational novel that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend - 5 stars!
"An American Marriage" by Tayari Jones was a book of two parts for me. The first was compelling, the second not so much. I definitely didn't hate it but it wasn't my favourite either, sitting somewhere in the middle with 3 stars.
"Brick Lane" has been on my shelf for years and now I've finished it, I'm underwhelmed and a little disappointed. Despite some good chapters exploring what it's like to move to the UK as an immigrant, it's long and a little tedious at times - 2 stars.
